Threat Assessment & Management

At Borders McLaughlin, we feel an individual or corporation is entitled to protect themselves from compromises in personal and corporate safety, security, and privacy.  In order to reduce vulnerability to violence it must start with accurate assessments.  Due to the high stakes and liability of violent acts, accurate predictions must be made by highly trained and qualified professionals who review, assess, and investigate those incidents or situations that put us at risk.

Another important component is the availability of an assessment tool, which is completely impartial to the persons involved and promotes accurate results.  One must also look into the context of the situation to form an accurate prediction.  Without an accurate assessment, a successful prevention plan cannot be implemented.  We do not promote fear of violence or threats, but manage those situations, which will therefore reduce fear and stress.  Few areas of Behavioral Science have advanced more rapidly than the objective assessment of threats.  We are proud to be industry leaders in this field.

A direct threat to safety is not always a reliable pre-incident indicator to violent attacks.  This is demonstrated by research showing that not one successful public-figure attacker, in the history of the media age, directly threatened his victim prior to the attack.  Effective assessments of peculiar, irregular or otherwise inappropriate communications are considered necessary even when those communications are not direct threats made to an individual or corporation.

Many of our assessments utilize the impartial assessment tool known as MOSAIC. MOSAIC is a computer-assisted assessment method that provides guidance in the evaluation of situations that may escalate to violence.  It combines the influence and experience of the nation’s leading experts in several related fields (psychology, law enforcement, judicial, prosecutorial, mental health, probation, threat assessment, sociology, behavioral sciences, etc.).

MOSAIC is currently being utilized to assess threats to public figures and celebrities, governmental officials, Supreme Court Justices, several Fortune 500 companies, and universities throughout the world. Borders McLaughlin is one of very few privately held companys authorized to use MOSAIC.

The second element of the unique service offered by Borders McLaughlin is the management aspect of the completed assessments.  Although we may recommend and mobilize major protective operations, the majority of our management plans consist of minor alterations, which increase safety, security, privacy and reduce our client’s vulnerability.  Even highly visible clients will rarely need elaborate security and safety plans.  Many situations may simply require monitoring and follow up.

The following situations are examples in which the above mentioned services may be considered: incidents of domestic violence, angry or violent employees in the workplace, employees or clients who make threats or act incongruously in the workplace, public or media figure threats or suspicion of stalking, incidents of actual stalking behavior, and any other situation that may cause fear to an intended victim.
